Clubs

Two reading incentive programs are currently offered to Hay Primary students! The AR Wall Project and the After School Reading Club.

The AR Wall project rewards hard work and improved reading skills by honoring any and all students in Grades K-4, including special needs children, with an open book poster on the walls outside the Media Center. Each open book poster shows the student’s name and the points earned (Gr. 3 & 4), or number of books read (Gr. K2). Students earn dog tags and small incentive prizes as they reach each predetermined goal level. Approximately 70% of our students participate each year.

The After School Reading Club is held approximately each month. There are 8 sessions per school year, four weeks per session, three days per week, for one hour after school each day of the session. Open to any student in Gr. 1-4 who can read independently, or who may need a minimal amount of help with their reading. Kindergarteners are welcome to participate provided they have shown success in quizzes taken on our lowest level books or higher. Reading club encourages students to read at their own pace in a “no fail” setting. Students may take Accelerated Reader quizzes on books read in Reading Club. Students are rotated each session to allow as many of our students as possible a chance to participate in Reading Club. Students who are struggling or who need to improve their self confidence as readers have found that the Reading Club provides the encouragement and support they need.
