Instruction

Bucket Fillers

Teachers at Hay Primary used the book Have You Filled Someone’s Bucket Today? to encourage positive behavior. Students see how rewarding it is to express daily kindness, appreciation, and love. They understand the effects of their actions and words on the well being of others and themselves. The teachers and faculty have their own branded money and they give other faculty and staff the money with a note why when there is a good deed performed. These notes are then posted on a bulletin board for all to see. Students also fill each other’s buckets and write down their good deeds. These are announced over the PA in the morning and their notes also go on the bulletin board.

Community Partnership

For the past 3 years, First Brethren Church has provided school supplies, coats, gloves and hats to the students at Hay Primary Center. On Fridays they provide food bags for 30% of our students to take home for the weekend. Over 45% of our students receive some type of assistance from this partnership. We are also looking forward this year to receiving assistance from this church for classes on time management and homework assistance, in addition to the other things they have done in the past.

Honor Roll

Honor Roll is awarded to 4th graders only. Certificates are handed out at the assembly following each grading period.

Interventions With Specials Teachers

This year Hay has begun to use the talents of our specials teachers to help improve the reading skills of the students. This year the Art, Music, and Physical Education teachers participate in the SOAR groups.

ISTEP Excitement

Every year the entire school comes together to encourage our 3rd and 4th grade students to do their best on the ISTEP test. Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classes adopt a 3rd and 4th grade class prior to the test. They send the students in their buddy class positive notes and treats the week before the test. We have an assembly before the test with the whole school. The theme last year was Superhero who would soar above the rest to master the test.

Perfect Attendance

Perfect attendance is rewarded at the end of each grading period with a certificate given by the teacher either in an assembly or at parent/teacher conferences.

Student Artwork Displays

Students at Hay Primary have the opportunity during the school year to display their artwork throughout the community. Over 100 student artworks have been displayed at the SBCSC Administration Building so far this year. Their displays have featured creations which included 3-D mixed-media, clay, oil pastels, printmaking, traditional painting and works in other media. Hay has an ongoing exhibit within the school throughout the year. All assignments are aligned with Indiana’s Academic Standards to be globally competitive in the 21st century.

Wilson Lips

The Foundations program by Wilson Language Reading is used in the classroom to teach students reading fundamentals. Students who need additional help in learning to read have the benefit of receiving tutoring in the Wilson Language Program. This program is based on the research-based Orton—Gillingham principles, WRS is a highly structured remedial program that directly teaches language structure to students who have difficulty learning to read or require multi-sensory language instruction.

Tutors at Hay Primary use the Wilson method to tutor approximately 190 K-4th grade students in small group sessions during the 90 minute reading block during the school day. The classroom teachers and tutors work together to provide a systematic and cumulative approach to teach total word structure for decoding (reading) and encoding (writing). Students engage in the program due to the multisensory and interactive methods which include manipulating sounds with various materials, specific methods and use their fingers to “tap” the sounds.
