Student of the Month

A student of the month is chosen with the following criteria in mind:

  1. The student of the month candidate works to their potential at all times
  2. The candidate turns in their homework and school work in a timely manner.
  3. The candidate follows school rules at all times.
  4. The candidate has not been a frequent visitor to the office for discipline referrals
  5. The candidate is cooperative with both adults and fellow students.

Each selected student enjoys a month upon our bulletin board. We list their name, grade and teacher in order to celebrate the student's success in the education process.

Teacher of the Year

Each year staff members have the opportunity to recognize teachers through nominating the teacher of the year. After the nominations are complete the top three teachers are placed on a ballot and the entire staff gets to vote. The teacher who was chosen for this year’s teacher of the year was Carolyn Carpenter, a Kindergarten teacher, in recognition of quality instruction for every student every day.

Carolyn Carpenter

Carolyn Carpenter was born on July 15, 1974 in Iowa. At age nine, she and her family moved to South Bend, where she was a student in the South Bend Community School Corporation from 5th grade until graduating from John Adams High School in 1992. She attended Indiana University South Bend, where she earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education and a kindergarten endorsement. She began her teaching career at Warren Elementary, where she taught 1st grade, 6th grade, and 4th grade. Upon the implementation of "Plan Z" in 2003, she was bumped out of Warren and landed at kindergarten at Muessel Primary. She stayed in kindergarten at Muessel for eight years, then decided to make a change and moved to Hay Primary, still teaching kindergarten. The current school years marks her 17th year of teaching. She currently lives in South Bend with her husband, Jim(a proud South Bend Clay High School teacher), and her two children, Timothy and Amanda (both of whom attend and love Kennedy Primary Academy in South Bend.)
